Plastic Innovations and Marine Debris

Plastic Innovations and Marine Debris

This webinar originally aired on 26 July 2012.

This webinar explored how two companies' innovations in plastic manufacturing could help address the problem of persistent ocean plastics in different ways.

Panelists:

  • Adam Lowry, Co-Founder and Chief Greenskeeper, Method Products

Method has co-developed a polyethylene bottle made from mixed ocean plastic, which the company is bringing to market this year. Method developed the bottle specifically to help address the ocean trash problem and is seeking partnerships to ensure a sustainable stream of collected ocean plastic.

  • Bob Engle, VP Biopolymers, Metabolix

Metabolix's Mirel bioplastic is fully biodegradable in seawater and other environments, and is already on the market in several products.

Supplementary material: Independent tests on biodegradability/toxicity of Metabolix's Mirel bioplastic (2011)
